Degree Offered - The distance learning graduate degree offered by the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering is a Master of Engineering (ME) in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering. The purpose of the masters degree program is to strengthen and extend undergraduate training and competence. This extension is achieved through coursework for the Master of Engineering degree.

Admission Requirements - Requirements for admission to the MAE Master of Engineering program are the same as those for the School of Engineering and Applied Science. Master of Engineering students are not considered for financial aid.

Course Requirements - Each Master of Engineering student's Program of Study must include at least 30 semester hours of approved graduate engineering coursework. Of these, at least 15 semester hours must be taken from the University of Virginia and at least 18 must either be MAE courses (offered by the Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering department) or must be substantially similar to courses offered in the department (similarly to be determined by petition to the MAE graduate studies committee). No other specific course requirements are imposed except that the Program of Study must be submitted to and approved by both the student's academic advisor and the Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Department. The Program of Study should be submitted no later than the second semester of study but may be subsequently revised.

Degree Requirements - The Master of Engineering degree in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering carries the same degree requirements as for other programs in the School of Engineering and Applied Science . Students must complete a plan of study as outlined above with an earned grade of C or better for all courses in the plan. Master of Engineering degrees must be earned in no more than seven years from the date of the first course in the plan of study. No thesis is required.  See additional information:  Degree Program requirements

Courses Offered - A tentative list of distance learning MAE course offerings is provided in the CGEP long-range plan.
