Students enrolled in a University of Virginia distance learning course in engineering, who are dissatisfied with some aspect of their course, have several avenues through which concerns can be addressed. Prior to pursuing these avenues, students are asked to confirm that their concerns are justified, and not the result of a simple misunderstanding with a faculty instructor or distance learning staff member. Students with valid concerns are encouraged to express their concerns quickly and professionally when the problems arise. Do not wait until the end of the semester. Only by addressing concerns during the semester can students reasonably expect corrections to occur that benefit their learning experience.
For academic concerns (e.g. course content and curriculum specific concerns):
- Students should first contact the course instructor by e-mail and phone to express specific course concerns.
- If the instructor is unresponsive within a reasonable timeframe (e.g. phone call not returned within 72 hours, or specific problem not appropriately addressed within one week of class), students should then contact the department chair person who oversees the faculty member and the course. Department chair person contact information can be found through the department links provided at the top of this page: www.seas.virginia.edu . If a student cannot identify the appropriate department chair person, contact Rita Kostoff (rfk2u@virginia.edu , 434-924-4051), and she will assist you.
- If a reasonable response to your expression of concern is not received from the instructor and the department chair, you should contact the engineering school's Associate Dean for Graduate Programs, Dr. Kathy Thornton (kt4n@virginia.edu , 434-982-3079).
For distance learning course support concerns (e.g. poor broadcast quality, inadequate on-site support for homework pickup and return, no access to video stream):
- Students should first address their concern to the on-site distance learning support staff. If students are unable to access the archived video streams made available by their faculty instructors, students should send an e-mail directly to dvideo@virginia.edu to report the access problem.
- If the on-site support staff is unresponsive or unable to resolve concerns, students should then contact the Director of Engineering School Distance Learning at UVA, Dr. James Groves (jgroves@virginia.edu , 434-924-6261).
- If a reasonable response to your expression of concern is not received from the on-site staff or distance learning director, you should contact the engineering school's Senior Associate Dean, Barry W. Johnson (bwj@virginia.edu , 434-924-3310).
