1. What is the Commonwealth Graduate Engineering Program (CGEP)?
CGEP is the Commonwealth of Virginia's statewide, distance education program in graduate engineering. UVa, Virginia Tech, Virginia Commonwealth University, Old Dominion University, and George Mason University participate in the program, offering a set of non-research masters degrees to students in Virginia and beyond
2. What UVa departments offer degrees through CGEP?
UVa's CGEP contribution is focused upon supporting students who want to earn non-research Masters of Engineering degrees. UVa currently offers seven Masters of Engineering degrees through CGEP - in Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Engineering Physics, Materials Science and Engineering, Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering, and Systems & Information Engineering. In addition to the degrees offered by UVa, the other CGEP schools offer a set of degrees through the program. The list of degrees offered by other CGEP schools can be found at: http://www.cgep.virginia.edu/degrees.html. UVa recognizes that some students in the distance environment might be interested in Masters of Science or Ph.D. degrees. While the UVa courses offered through CGEP can be used to support such degree programs, both the M.S. and Ph.D. programs have additional requirements (e.g. research & residency) beyond coursework. These additional requirements often make if difficult (but not impossible) for students in the distance environment to pursue M.S. or Ph.D. degrees. Students interested in a Masters of Science or Ph.D. degree should discuss such options with their discipline's Advising Point of Contact. For contact information, please see question 11 below, referring to the Advising Point of Contact.
3. How many courses do I need to take to earn my UVa Masters of Engineering degree?
To earn a Masters of Engineering degree at UVa, a student must complete 10 graduate courses. No research thesis is required for the Masters of Engineering degree. The Masters of Engineering degree earned through CGEP is identical to the degree earned by students on-campus at UVa.
4. What courses can I take for my distance education Masters of Engineering degree from UVa? Can I take courses at schools other than UVa and count those courses towards my UVa degree?
For your UVa distance education Masters of Engineering program, you can take courses offered by UVa and the other CGEP schools. The courses expected to be broadcast by UVa in the next several years can be found at: http://www.cgep.virginia.edu/fiveyear.html. The distance education courses to be offered by the other CGEP schools can be found at: http://cgep.virginia.gov (Go to "Course Schedule " or "Browse Courses" ). To understand the particular course requirements for any one of the UVa degree programs, students should consult with the Advising Point of Contact listed in question 11 below. Prior to taking courses towards a degree, students are strongly encouraged to submit a degree program application and consult with the Advising Point of Contact for their program to develop an approved Plan of Study. Development of an approved Plan of Study will help to ensure that as many courses as possible, including transfer credits, are counted towards a student's degree. Students enrolled in the distance network program can take courses from UVa and the other CGEP schools. When a UVA student takes courses from one or more of the other CGEP schools, at least half of the classes degree must be UVa classes. If students want to transfer credits from schools outside the CGEP program, then they can transfer at most four courses from those other schools.
5. How does CGEP make its courses available to students in the distance environment?
Most of CGEP's course offerings are broadcast live using two-way digital videoconferencing technology. The two-way videoconferencing environment provides students in the distance environment with an interactive, real-time learning environment. They can see and hear the faculty member as he or she lectures. They can also see the faculty members lecture notes in real time. If a student in the distance environment has a question, he or she can ask the question by pressing a button to open an audio link back to UVa. While the question is being asked, the faculty member can also see that student in the remote environment. While the courses are broadcast live, videotapes and on-line archives of all classes are available until the end of the semester. If a student misses a class because of a personal or work-related conflict, he or she can view that lecture by requesting a tape or by viewing the class session from UVa's stream media web site. The streaming media site is designed to be used with a high-speed a high-speed internet connection. Modem connections are not sufficient for viewing the archived class sessions.
6. Where can I view a UVa engineering distance education class offered through the distance learning program?
For specific receive site locations, please send an inquiry to the CGEP Administrative Point of Contact listed in question 11 below, or see: Receive Locations
7. What are the pre-requisites for getting into the program (e.g., types of undergrad degrees acceptable, required undergraduate courses, etc.)? Is there a provisional status for an applicant who may not meet all of the admission requirements?
The overall UVa Engineering School graduate admission requirements can be found at the following web address: http://www.cgep.virginia.edu/instructions.html In addition to these specific requirements, students entering the degree program of a particular discipline should consult with the Advising Point of Contact listed below in question 11. Once a student is accepted into a UVa distance education graduate engineering degree program, the discipline advisor will look most closely at a student's preparation for specific courses on his or her proposed Plan of Study. Proper prerequisite preparation is important to academic success. Students may be encouraged to consider additional academic preparation before enrolling in certain classes. The UVa engineering school admissions team will look at the whole application of a student. When a portion of a student's record is below the normal admissions requirements, the student is strongly encouraged to include an explanation describing why his or her application should be considered and giving any special circumstances. Alternatively, a student can take a couple of graduate courses as a non-degree student and apply after achieving success at the graduate level.
8. How do I make an application to the UVa distance education graduate engineering degree program?
A specific list of materials and documents required for an application to the UVa distance education Masters of Engineering program can be found at the following address: http://www.cgep.virginia.edu/instructions.html
The overall requirements for a graduate engineering degree program at UVa can be found at the following address: http://www.cgep.virginia.edu/requirements.html
9. Can an applicant enroll as a non-degree student in the UVa distance education graduate engineering program? If so, how many courses can be taken prior to making an official degree application?
Yes. An applicant can enroll as a non-degree student. The procedure for enrolling is found at the following web address: http://www.cgep.virginia.edu/instructions.html
If a student knows that he or she plans to enroll in a degree program, an official degree application is strongly encouraged no later than the end of the first semester of classes. It is possible for a student to continue beyond the first semester of coursework as a non-degree student before making a degree program application. However such a plan of action will not initiate student advising by a UVa faculty member. As a result, a student could find at a later date that one or more courses taken as a non-degree student will not be accepted into an approved Plan of Study towards a UVa degree.
10. What is UVa's GRE policy and timeline (i.e., When does one have to take the test.)? How will the GRE scores be used in the decision process?
For applicants to UVA's distance education graduate engineering program, the General GRE must be taken before a student can be accepted. Students are allowed to start their coursework and degree program application at the same time. For example, a student can begin to take a course in August of 2003 while simultaneously completing the degree application. In this example, taking the GRE's in October of 2003 is completely acceptable. There is no specific rule about how GRE scores will factor into a degree program application process. UVa wants to recruit students with strong academic records, and GRE scores are one way of measuring academic potential. Students are encouraged to do their best when taking the GREs.

- 12. What is the effect on a student's admission status if he or she has to miss one or more semesters due to a work or personal situation?
A student will not be dismissed from the UVa distance education program for missing one or more semesters due to extenuating circumstances. However the university requires that graduate degrees be completed within seven years. Additionally, UVa does not guarantee to offer any one of its distance education programs indefinitely. Thus, students are encouraged to continue timely progress towards their degree goals.
13. What days and times will the UVa distance education graduate engineering courses be taught?
Courses for the UVa engineering distance education program will be taught either on Monday/Wednesday or Tuesday/Thursday. Each class session typically lasts for 1 hr and 15 minutes. The earliest expected start time for any class is 12:30 pm. The latest expected start time for any class is 8 pm. During the fall semester, classes generally start around Labor Day and run until the first or second week of December. During the winter semester classes generally start in the middle of January and run until the first or second week of May. There are certain holidays during each semester that will interrupt the regular course broadcast schedule. Holiday schedules for the current semester can be found at: http://www.cgep.virginia.edu/index.html ('Current semester' Calendar, e.g. Fall 2006 Calendar). The program offers a limited number of courses during the summer. Please send an inquiry to the CGEP Administrative Point of Contact for more information on summer offerings.
14. Will professors be willing to travel to receive sites to teach a couple of lectures for each course? Professors from UVa are encouraged to travel to receive sites where large numbers of students are taking courses via the distance network. UVa faculty have done this in the past and broadcast individual lectures from these remote locations. To help ensure that faculty make such trips, please express your interest for such visits to your UVa instructors at the beginning of the semester by e-mail and send a carbon copy of your request to the Administrative Point of Contact listed in question 11 above.
15. Will UVa professors provide a complete syllabus (including required texts/materials, class times, etc.) prior to course registration?
Yes. A complete course syllabus will be provided at least three weeks before the start of the class and course registration. See the present semester schedule at http://cgep.virginia.edu/index.html, (click on course number/name), or send an e-mail request to the Administrative Point of Contact listed in question 11 above.
16. How do I register and pay to take a UVA distance education graduate engineering class?
